English Literature Admissions Test

English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT)

The English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) was developed by Cambridge Assessment on behalf of the University of Oxford.  Cambridge Assessment was approached by the Faculty of English at the University of Oxford in 2006 with a request to collaborate in the development of a pre-interview admissions test for applicants to undergraduate courses in English.

ELAT is designed to enable applicants to show their ability in the key skill of close reading, paying attention to such elements as the language, imagery, allusion, syntax, form and structure of the passages set for comment.  It will assess how far students have developed this understanding and, with it, the ability to shape and articulate an informed response to unfamiliar literary material.
