Malta Chamber attends consultation meeting with the PN

The meeting was held with a number of MCESD members to discuss their recently published document ‘A Better Quality of life for you – proposals for the Environment’. Mr Xuereb was accompanied by Mr Andre’ Fenech, Head of Policy Development.

Mr Xuereb said that the Malta Chamber welcomes this document in view of the links and similarities it had with the Malta Chamber’s own Economic Vision 2014-2020. He said that the Chamber was a big supporter of sustainability development and said that the long- term strategy of this document entitled Agenda 2050 was welcome.

More specifically, Perit Xuereb spoke of the need for building regulations to be drafted and published and the need for further incentives and promotion of the Green Industry and jobs. This, he said is an area which requires further investment and commitment from decision makers. He also spoke in detail about the importance of information technology as an enabler for all sectors to become more sustainable in the long term.

The meeting was opened by Dr Simon Busuttil, Leader of the Opposition who spoke of the need to bring awareness amongst stakeholders that the economy is compatible with the environment and vice-versa. He also spoke of the fact that safeguarding the Environment ensures a better quality of life for all of society.

Dr Marthese Portelli, shadow Minister for the Environment, delivered a presentation on the details of the document and explained that the main principles rested on 4 main pillars namely 1. A holistic perspective; 2. Long-term planning, 3. Strategic thinking linked to sustainable development and 4. Environmental reflection of values.

Dr Portelli then explained some of the measures being proposed in the document which was followed by a discussion with those present.

During a courtesy meeting with a delegation from Partit Laburista, Malta Chamber President Mr Frank V. Farrugia said that the priorities of the Chamber were very similar to those of the political class, as they both shared an aspiration towards socio-economic balance.
