Joe Bartolo, a prominent campaigner in the fight against poverty and a keen promoter of social housing, died on Sunday aged 69.

Both the Labour and the Nationalist parties paid tribute to Mr Bartolo, who represented the Alleanza Kontra l-Faqar in the Anti-Poverty Forum Malta.

Labour described him as a strong voice for the less fortunate, adding he had always striven hard to improve the quality of life of every member of society.

The Nationalist Party recalled that Mr Bartolo had continued with the fight against poverty, which the late Charles Miceli had championed.

Known as ‘Sloopy’, Mr Bartolo formed part of NGO Graffitti and of the University of Malta’s Books Cooperative.
