The wireless design has taken on such a strong following that knockoffs exist, including a pair that doesn’t even play music.

CNN Tech and Forbes have both reported on rumours that Apple will be releasing a high-end version of its widely popular wireless headphones, AirPods.

CNN says that the company is expected to launch AirPods Pro, featuring a new metal design with improved quality, rumoured to cost $260 (€233), at a press conference later in October. It cited the rumour as having been initially shared in the China Economic Daily.

Locally, the wireless headphones retail at around €180.

When asked for comment by CNN, Apple declined to respond, further fuelling the rumours. Apple has been showcasing premium versions of product releases for Macs, iPhones and iPads, further supporting the idea that the company has plans for a premium version of the AirPods.

Despite being initially mocked for its design by many, it has amassed a strong following, with several generic brands producing replicas. A highly popular online fashion retailer even sells a mock version of the Airpods – however it does not play music and is only intended as a fashion accessory.
