Safeguarding the environment, sustainability in energy and water management, improving the road network, investing and promoting social justice and achieving gender balance in parliament are the government’s top priorities for the upcoming national budget.
A pre-budget document, shared with journalists at the end of a press conference addressed by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna, revealed the theme for the upcoming 2020 Budget to be ‘Sustaining inclusive growth’.
The government will also reportedly ‘continue with its drive to strengthen the regulatory and supervisory institutions while focusing on making Malta a leading player in technological innovation as well as raising the quality of Malta’s tourism product offer’.
Minister Scicluna indicated the budget for 2020 will be presented some time in mid-October.
When questioned by members of the press, the Minister did not divulge specific budget measures, saying that it is not usual to make such announcements so early on. He also refused to rule out any increases in tax.
The main contents of the pre-budget document focuses on the impact of the past budgets, a review of Malta’s economic performance as well as financial estimates.
Minister Scicluna contended that reductions in poverty is thanks to coordinated policies by the government to tackle the issue.
