Denise Micallef Xuereb – Construction and Development Sector Can Be Part Of The Solution

Ms Micallef Xuereb said that development did not mean sacrificing Malta’s built or environmental heritage, but insisted that there needed to be further regulation and well thought-out masterplans.

Denise Micallef Xuereb, Construction and Development Director of AX Group, said that construction and development were not the same thing.

“Construction supports development, and development can be a vehicle for economic growth and sustainability,” Ms Micallef Xuereb said, addressing the Parliament of Enterprises organised by the Malta Chamber of Commerce.

She said that development did not mean sacrificing Malta’s built or environmental heritage, but insisted that there needed to be further regulation and well thought-out masterplans.

“The sector is currently not sufficiently regulated, and this has an impact on the quality and safety of the projects being developed.”

She said that measures such as the registration of contractors and the introduction of a classification system were quality advances that would lead to the sector being seen in a new light.

However, Ms Micallef Xuereb said that in order to bring about this change, there needed to be support from the highest administrative levels.

“Construction and development shouldn’t be seen as a problem but can be part of a solution, but the private sector cannot do this alone.”
