Former Nationalist Party (PN) leader Simon Busuttil has been appointed secretary general of the European People’s Party (EPP) within the European Parliament (EP).
As a result, Dr Busuttil will be resigning from his role as MP in local Parliament. The post of secretary general is one of the highest within the EPP, making him second in command after president Manfred Weber.
Dr Busuttil will be replacing outgoing EPP secretary general Martin Kamp, who occupied the role for 12 years.
The EPP is a centre-right party within the EP with the largest number of seats in Parliament. The PN falls within this political family, while the Labour Party is affiliated with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D).
Dr Busuttil’s departure from Maltese Parliament will mean a by-election in the twelfth district. He resigned from his position of PN leader in 2017 after the Labour Party, under Joseph Muscat, won by a second landslide victory.
Maltachamber.org.mt congratulates Dr Busuttil on his prestigious new position.
