Identity Malta begins roll out of new technologically advanced Identity Cards

28th September 2020

Prime Minister Robert Abela welcomed the new ID cards, affirming that “through Identity Malta, Government is showing how serious it is taking the protection of individuals’ identities.”

New, more technologically advanced Identity Cards have started being circulated by Identity Malta, which will feature new security features that will make it harder for them to be copied or falsified.

Prime Minister Robert Abela welcomed the issuing of the new ID cards, affirming that “through Identity Malta, Government is showing how serious it is taking the protection of individuals’ identities.”

Holders of the new ID cards will be able to use them to verify their identity while accessing online Government services.

The new ID cards will be issued and enter circulation slowly, rather than through a mass rollout, with the older cards continuing to be used until their expiration.

The new cards will be contactless and will feature a date which can be accessed only through a Card Access Number on the front and via a QR code at the back.
