Incoming European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has named her choices for the EU’s executive branch, making it the most gender-diverse team in the EU’s history.
She has named 13 woman and 14 men for the positions, with Maltese Minister Helena Dalli being named for the equality portfolio. Dr Dalli would be Malta's first female EU Commissioner should Mrs Von Der Leyen's choices be approved.
The UK has not been assigned a nominee in view of Brexit being scheduled for 31st Obctober. What will happen next with regards the UK’s seat at the Commission table should the House of Commons’ bill to delay Brexit is honoured.
The European Parliament must now accept or reject Mrs Von der Leyen’s executive team before they are officially appointed. She is succeeding outgoing European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker.
Minister Helena Dalli has been serving under the European affairs and equality portfolio with PM Joseph Muscat’s Labour government. Former Minister Edward Zammit Lewis has been chosen to replace Dr Dalli should she be confirmed as European Commissioner.
Dr Dalli was previously Civil Liberties Minister under the previous legislature.
