Information Session on Green Public Procurement 2019-2025

As authorities draft the Second Green Public Procurement National Action Plan for 2019-2025, the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry shall be holding an information and consultation session for all interest economic operators on Thursday 17th January 2019.

Green Public Procurement is defined as ‘a process whereby public authorities seek to procure, goods, services and works with a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle when compared to goods, services and works with the same primary function that would otherwise be procured’. The raison d`etre for this policy initiative stems from the fact that public authorities in Malta are major consumers.

The scope of the second NAP is twofold; to take stock of the experiences of the first NAP by strengthening what has already been achieved and address challenges encountered. It also aims at progressively increasing the share of government’s procurement in greener products to 90% of tenders which fall under its scope. The second NAP is set to be more ambitious in terms of targets, but still adopts a realistic and incremental approach. It sets out targets for sixteen product and service groups which include:

Copying and graphic paper, gardening products and services, computers and monitors, imaging equipment, textiles, cleaning products and services, street lighting and traffic signals, transport, office building design, construction and management, road design, construction and maintenance, sanitary tap-ware, toilets and urinals and hospitality and catering services.
