The 12-hour long L-Istrina telethon raised a total of €6,220,000 in donations for the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.
The annual event, held on Boxing Day, took longer than is ordinary to pick up steam. L-Istrina failed to break the €3m mark by 6pm. A last-minute effort helped to boost the final number to over €6 million by midnight, falling short of the record set in 2018 at €7,134,036.
“I was not expecting this but it goes to show the true nature of the Maltese who rally to help others when they are called to do so,” President George Vella, who presides over the MCCF, said as the event came to a close.
This was President Vella’s first L-Istrina, coming at a troubled time for the island.
“When the sick are involved, we all come together to help despite what the country is passing through,” the President said.
Bank of Valletta donated a generous €200,000 and the Malta Tourism Authority donated €40,000. The MTA also donated four tickets for a Manchester United home game.
