Malta posts second lowest industrial production drop in EU

Figures show things started to improve in May


Malta recorded the second lowest decrease in industrial production within the European Union in May when compared to a year earlier.

Figures released by Eurostat through the National Statistics Office show that the lowest drop was in Finland and the highest in Slovakia.

Eurostat said that, in May, when member states began relaxing COVID-19 containment measures, the seasonally adjusted industrial production rose by 12.4 per cent in the euro area and by 11.4 per cent in the EU, compared with April 2020, when industrial production fell by 18.2 per cent both in the euro area and in the EU. In Malta, total industrial production increased by 3 per cent. It had dropped by 7 per cent in April over May, when it had fallen by 6.7 per cent when compared with the previous month.

Industrial production decreased by 20.9 per cent in the euro area and by 20.5 per cent in the EU when comparing this May with the same month in 2019.

Production of durable consumer goods in the euro area rose by 54.2 per cent, capital goods by 25.4 per cent, intermediate goods by 10.0 per cent, non-durable consumer goods by 2.8 per cent and energy by 2.3 per cent in May over the previous month.

In the EU, production of durable consumer goods grew by 47.7 per cent, capital goods by 24.8 per cent, intermediate goods by 8.7 per cent, energy by 2.5 per cent and non-durable consumer goods by 1.8 per cent.

When making an annual comparison, production of capital goods in the euro area fell by 28.4 per cent, durable consumer goods by 24.0 per cent, intermediate goods by 19.7 per cent, non-durable consumer goods by 14.4 per cent and energy by 10.3 per cent this May.

In the EU, production of capital goods fell by 29.5 per cent, durable consumer goods by 23.2 per cent, intermediate goods by 18.5 per cent, non-durable consumer goods by 13.4 per cent and energy by 10.6 per cent.
