Maltese Wine Wins Prestigious Award In London

Delicata’s Gran Cavalier Syrah D.O.K scoops bronze medal.

Delicata’s Gran Cavalier Syrah D.O.K. Malta, Superior has won a bronze medal. The 2017 vintage was praised at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) in London, which is one of the world's most meticulously judged wine competitions.

Sarah Abbott MW, Tim Atkin MW, Peter McCombie MW, Oz Clarke, Dr. Jamie Goode and Charles Metcalfe are the six co-chairs, who taste every single medal-winning wine, ensuring that only the best succeed.

Loved by many and lauded by experts, Delicata’s 2017 Gran Cavalier Syrah was typified as having flavours of “blackberry, chocolate, coconut and oat spice” and being “balanced by fresh acidity, with dusty tannins” and made in an “oaky, well-structured style.”

Previous vintages of Malta’s Gran Cavalier Syrah have won silver medals at the Vinalies Internationales and the Syrah du Monde contests in France.

The wine has been rated on par with wines from the renowned appellations of Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie, where the Syrah grape is known to shine, and some heavy hitters exported by the big names from Australia’s top regions McLaren Vale, Barossa and Hunter Valley.

Delicata’s sun-kissed, full-bodied world-class red is made purely from hand-picked Maltese Syrah grapes and matured in 225 litre oak barriques, which are judiciously stored in the winery’s bespoke barrel room.

Delicata is the only Maltese winery to win at the 2019 IWC. The Gran Cavalier range is Malta’s most awarded wine collection with 29 international awards.
