Last Friday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates overtook Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to reclaim his position as the richest person in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Bloomberg estimates Mr Gates as having a net worth of $110bn, while he has not held the number one ranking in over two years. In October, he surpassed Mr Bezos for a brief period after Amazon reported that its profit for the three months ending in September dropped by close to 28 per cent when compared with the previous year.
Thanks to Microsoft shares shooting up close to 48 per cent this year, Mr Gates was able to reclaim his top position. Microsoft was boosted last month after it beat out Amazon for a $10bn cloud-computing contract with the Pentagon.
Mr Bezos has also been impacted by the pay out of a significant portion of his Amazon stake in his divorce from MacKenzie Bezos this year. The pair had been married for 25 years. Mr Bezos is now estimated to be worth $108.7bn.
Mr Gates recently commented about his wealth in response to a discussion taking place about a wealth tax proposed by Democratic presidential candidates. He remarked that he has already paid $10bn in taxes and would be willing to up that to $20bn.
