Robert Abela officially sworn in as Malta’s 14th Prime Minister

He is the son of President Emeritus George Abela and is the eighth Prime Minister of Malta since the island achieved independence.

Robert Abela has officially been sworn in as Malta’s 14th Prime Minister on Monday afternoon at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Valletta.

Dr Abela, a lawyer by profession, is the son of President Emeritus George Abela. Dr Abela was elected as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party after paid-up members of the latter participated in a vote over the weekend.

Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was in attendance of the swearing in ceremony, along with most members of Cabinet. 

A number of Dr Abela’s supporters gathered in St Geroge’s Square as a show of support to Malta’s new Prime Minister.
