UK will impose 14-day quarantine order on people arriving from overseas

Home secretary Priti Patel is expected to announce the self-isolation order later today.

It is expected that UK home secretary Priti Patel will outline plans for a much-debated self-isolation order applicable to travellers arriving in the UK from overseas today.

Despite criticism from the travel industry, travellers to the UK will face spot checks and £1,000 fines for not adhering to the quarantine order starting in June, which is aimed at stemming the spread of Covid-19.

The measure has drawn ire from scientists and opposition MPs, which have criticised the order’s validity due to the country’s already high number of Covid-19 cases.

Indeed, earlier in February, the World Health Organisation maintained that measures which “significantly interfere” with overseas travel “may only be justified at the beginning of an outbreak”.
