Online Info Session: Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is established by Regulation (EU) 2023/956. It is one of the legislative instruments adopted in the context of the European Green Deal, and its primary purpose is to address Carbon Leakage. Carbon leakage occurs when businesses transfer the production of goods/services to other countries with less stringent emissions constraints, or when goods from outside the EU, produced under less strict emissions standards, have a competitive advantage over similar goods produced in the EU. The ultimate aim is to incentivize non-EU suppliers to improve their environmental performance in the production of such goods.

The CBAM Regulation provides for a price to be paid in respect of carbon emitted in the production of certain goods, when those goods are imported into the EU, that is equivalent to the price paid by EU producers under the EU’s emissions trading system. The goods currently covered by the CBAM Regulation are iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, cement, electricity and hydrogen.

During this session, being organised in collaboration with Malta Resources Authority, we will explore what CBAM is, how CBAM is being implemented locally, and what importers need to do to comply.

The ‘misco Social Media Usage Trends Survey 2023/24’

The ‘misco Social Media Usage Trends Survey 2023/24’ is an annual online survey conducted by misco International among an online audience. Recognising the significant impact of the internet on our behaviour, the survey specifically focuses on social media usage. The goal is to explore the evolving landscape and its implications for various marketing aspects, including elements of marketing communications.

The survey builds upon previous years’ data, as similar investigations were conducted in 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2018. This continuity allows for meaningful comparisons and the identification of emerging trends. The results of this year’s survey promise to provide rich insights into several key areas, including the frequency and depth of social media activity, the effects of social media content, preferences among digital advertising audiences, and trends in online shopping behaviour.

By presenting a comprehensive analysis of social media usage patterns, the survey aims to shed light on the dynamic nature of online interactions and their impact on marketing strategies. Malta’s Economic Outlook 2024

Will the Economy remain Resilient?

Since 2020, the world economy has experienced four major shocks: a pandemic; a spike in energy prices; elevated inflation and a rapid rise in global interest rates. Meanwhile, geopolitical issues came at the forefront, with the ongoing war in Ukraine and the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Despite such challenging international conditions, the Maltese economy maintained good momentum throughout 2023. Forecasts to date indicate that over the next few years the country’s economic growth is likely to outpace that in the euro area. What explains such economic resilience? Is there a risk of a sudden stop?

Join us for this event where we will explore recent and expected economic developments, join the dots, and uncover patterns. Participate in the discussions among leading panelists about current economic trends and policies, in the context of the baseline trajectory for the Maltese economy, and the upside and downside risks surrounding this outlook.
